Westport Center for the Arts presents a staged reading of “Dark Was Their Journey.”
“Dark Was Their Journey” is an original play by Jacqee Gafford. The play takes place in 1995 during the off season of a vacation resort. Betty Shabazz, Myrlie Evers-Williams and Coretta Scott King are waiting in the resort patio area for their rooms to be ready. These three women belong to an exclusive club. Not even the Kennedy wives can lay claim to the painful spiral that these women and their children were forced into by their virtue of their husbands’ assassinations.
Over the years Betty, Myrlie and Coretta have developed a friendship, forged by the loss of their husbands and the need to connect with female friends who could understand the unique situation that has become their everyday lives. Only they know the things they have had to do to insure the future for themselves and their children. Only they know of the battles they have had to fight to make sure that the truth of their husbands legacies would become part of the fabric of America.
